Syracuse University considering dropping Academics to promote Football Program

In a surprising move by the Syracuse University governing body, the University has considered dropping the current Academic program to concentrate on the dismal state of the football program. University spokesperson, Cole Trickle stated that, "The University is currently deliberating cancelling all Academic programs starting in 2009 to concentrate on the Athletic programs."
Chancellor Nancy Cantor has made a statement in regards to the rumor and seemed open for the proposal,
"We are currently at a state here at the University where we need to decide whether or not Academics is needed at our University. We need to support this football program and put bodies in that Dome for our home games. We want this issue resolved and we feel it trumps our academics in many areas and is more valuable to this community at this time."

Trickle has also compared this situation to Florida State's decision to offer just auto mechanics and VCR/TV repair as the only subject material offered in the schools curriculum. Whether or not this will pass the Administrative vote, most of the student body and University staff seem to be behind this progressive action in creating an Athletic institution based on the potential revenue opportunity created by driving the football program.
"It's been certain for a while that Syracuse's mission is to provide the young men and women enrolled here with a Nationally Recognized football program, and this is the best way to drive that part of this initiative," Trickle said. "While it's feasible for an academic subsidiary to offer some accredited classes to an athletic program, the national polling has stated that our non-athletic operations do no good to the majority." Syracuse's restructuring program could begin with the elimination of the the Communication program starting in the fall of 09."
