Top Ten Sports Hi-Top Fades....Number 9: Lawrence Moten

With the emergence of Brandon Jennings in the basketball world with his old school Hi-Top Fade, we figured we would bring some of the best fades from days past for another Top 10 list. In the same fashion as we peruse the "Internets" searching for that perfect sports stache, we feel the same way for a few other old school fashion movements. One of those fantastic fashion endeavors in the past 15 years is the Hi-top fade. A Hi-top fade is a style of haircut where hair on the sides is cut off or kept very low and hair on the top of the head is very long and dope. (in contrast, a low fade is when hair on the top is kept shorter). The Hi-top has been a trend symbolizing the Golden Era of Hip Hop and urban contemporary music during the late 1980s and the early 1990s. The Hi-top fade was common among African-American youths between 1986 to 1993 and to a lesser extent in the mid-1990s (1994-1995). The style fell out of fashion by 1996. Tear.
Number 9: Lawrence "Poetry in" Moten
Moten's fade was more of a rounded flat top and crafted well ahead of his time. He had the fade during the darker years of rockin the style. With the influx of West Coast rappers and the immediate disappearance of "Pop-Rap", the fade was basically extinct until Moten dared to craft it to his game. Well done Lawrence
Lawrence Moten was the classic swing man player, able to play shooting guard and small forward. From the moment he first stepped on the court as a freshman, Moten displayed tremendous court awareness. He was not the most athletic player on the court, but he always seemed to be in the right position, make the right pass, and make the crucial shots. He possessed a decent perimeter shot and a fast slashing move to the hoop that made him difficult to defend.
Moten never forced the action in the game, instead playing entirely within the flow of the game. Often a game would end and you would be surprised that he had 20 points. His smooth style of play earned him the moniker "Poetry in Moten".
It was not as if Moten wasn't recognized on the court. With is trademark knee high white socks, and silver dollar sized bald spot on the side of his head (due to stress), he was quite visible. He was the Big East Rookie of the Year his freshman season, earning 3rd Team Big East Honors, and helping Syracuse win the Big East Championship. He was a three time 1st Team Big East Selection, putting him in very rare company. By time his career was completed, Moten was the all-time leading scorer in Big East history, and more importantly the All-time leading scorer in Syracuse history (surpassing Derrick Coleman). *I always wondered what that bald spot on his head was about? Lawrence, what stress did you have being "The Man" at Syracuse during the mid 90's. His time spent at SU was at the height of Orangemen basketball and his fade was well-rounded and built for showtime.
I will take my Lawrence Moten paired with a pinch of Big Daddy Kane...'Cause he's so smooth
